FOR PATIENTS
Contact lens care: basic hygiene habits
Start with your hands
Wash your hands with soap and water and dry them thoroughly before handling lenses. Have the supplies recommended by your specialist ready.
Keep water away from your lenses
Remove lenses before swimming or showering. Use the recommended solution for cleaning and storage; water is not a substitute. Do not mix used and fresh solution.
Confirm your routine
Ask for clear cleaning, case-care and wear instructions. CDC general guidance recommends rubbing and rinsing lenses with the recommended disinfecting solution, cleaning the case with solution and letting it dry upside down with the caps off. Confirm the method compatible with your lenses. Do not sleep in lenses unless your eye care professional directs you to. Ask before changing unclear instructions.
Respond to discomfort
If you experience discomfort, remove your lenses and contact your specialist. Good habits reduce risks but do not eliminate them.
